How To Install Floor Skirting Boards Yourself?

It is difficult to imagine modern renovation without using skirting boards . These are thin, rigid or elastic strips that are used at the last stage of floor covering design . At the same time, customers have access to a wide variety of skirting board models that differ not only in material, but also in size and color.

The purpose of the floor skirting board and its types

The skirting board not only performs decorative functions, but also protective ones. Thanks to this element, water and dust do not get under the floor covering through the gaps located at the junction of the wall and the floor. In addition, the skirting board:

  • Fixes linoleum or carpet around the perimeter of the room.
  • Provides protection for wallpaper or decorative plaster from moisture during cleaning.
  • Improves the overall aesthetics, complements the interior, unites all the details in the room into a single whole.

Some products conceal wires that are passed underneath them or through a special hole.

At the moment, there is a huge selection of skirting boards in stores. At the same time, all products are made from different materials and are characterized by their own features. As a rule, the following options are used when decorating the interiors of residential and commercial premises:

  • Plastic
  • Made of natural wood
  • Elastic
  • Polyurethane
  • Aluminum
  • Made of MDF
  • Ceramic

In addition, skirting boards differ in shape (classic dumbbell-shaped pieces, profiled products, straight strips), as well as size, material of manufacture and method of fixation.

How to choose a skirting board?

One of the main factors in choosing the shade of the floor skirting board is that it should be the same tone as the floor covering itself (possibly one tone lighter or darker). Because of this, most designers recommend purchasing laminate, parquet or solid wood and additional elements of the same brand, or better yet, the same series.

As for the size of the baseboard, remember:

  • For low walls (up to two and a half meters), skirting boards up to five centimeters high are more suitable.
  • For walls of medium height (slightly less than three meters), narrow skirting boards up to twelve centimeters high are suitable.
  • For high ceilings (under three meters), products up to twenty centimeters high are most suitable.

As for the material, PVC skirting boards will go well with carpet or laminate flooring , and natural wood products will go well with parquet and laminate flooring .

Preparing for installation

Before you start installing the skirting board, you should cut the material and create corners. In this case, you need to be extremely careful and accurate to prevent possible defects and uneven joints. Especially when using skirting boards made of wood, MDF, as well as elastic and polyurethane products.

At home, you can do the cutting using a miter box. But first, you should read the operating instructions for this device. To get the internal corners, each element is applied to the outer part of the miter box. Before cutting the baseboard, you need to lay out the panels to understand where to cut.

Fastening the skirting board to the wall

There are 3 main methods of fixing skirting boards. The main thing is to fix the element in the right place, without gaps and cracks. For this, you can use: glue, screws or nails, brackets or latches.

The installation process using self-tapping screws is carried out in the following order:

  • The skirting board with holes for screws is applied to the wall.
  • Then you need to make holes in the wall, which then need to be cleaned.
  • Self-tapping screws are installed into the holes of the decorative element.
  • It is important to fill the holes with putty.

Installing a floor skirting board with liquid nails or glue is the easiest option. You need to coat the decorative element with the purchased adhesive (but remember that the product is applied pointwise to narrow planks, and in waves to wide ones) and, starting from the corner, begin fixing the skirting board. The product must be pressed tightly against the wall, holding it in the desired position for a few moments.

Glue and nails do not provide the possibility of dismantling the strips. But skirting boards on screws, brackets and latches can be quickly removed and then reinstalled. In this case, a mounting strip is used to hide the fixation points. It is removed from the profile, which is attached to the wall. Then, the strip is put back on the profile, masking the traces of fixation.

At first it may seem that the baseboard is only a functional element that masks gaps and fixes the covering, and also allows cleaning the floor without damaging the walls. However, with the correct selection of this decorative element, you can get a more complete interior in which all the details will be harmoniously combined with each other.
